Fianl Refelction

I truly enjoyed the Web 2.0 summer session.  I feel that I have learned about new technology which I can now implement into my classroom. I also enjoyed being able to communicate with my colleagues regarding the technology we were all trying out and get feedback on how my final products turned out.  Furthermore, I feel I benefited greatly from seeing the final products of my colleagues since they had wonderful and creative ideas on how to create and utilize each technology!! I felt that "following" other camper's blogs was the biggest difficulty I had since it was hard for me to navigate into the site and find them.  After I had enough people to follow I felt the process went much smoother.

The product I liked the best was the zooburst.  I feel this will be a great project for my students to use for a college finder/exploring activity which can easily be shared as a presentation to the class.  I have been able to plan a lesson in which I will use the zooburst site for this coming school year! I also really enjoyed making my own you-tube channel.  I think this could be a great way to introduce students to each other in a flipped class.  I am not sure I would use this in my classroom since it is a bit time consuming if you are worried about getting everything "just right" but it is a great technology! I also love the google forms.  I use these for gathering data on the students who are on my caseload.  I find it is faster and easier for teachers to fill out one of these forms and send me their data than it is to gather the data other ways.  I was also surprised at how easy screen-casting was.  I was really nervous that I would not be able to complete this type of activity without help, but it was really easy! I think this could be a great way for me to create lessons for a sub or for a lesson I will use more than once in a day and possibly use each year.

I am so glad I took this course over the summer.  I really feel like it was worth while and informative.  I am glad to take these great new-to-me technologies with me into my classroom.  I hope to implement 2-3 of them this year.

Activity 10

Good Reads

I really like this site! Good Reads has a lot to offer in the area of English.  I am co-teaching English 10 this year and I especially like the quotes that can be sent to your e-mail daily (quote of the day) from a famous writer who is having a birthday or had a significant event occur on that day in history.  I think I could use these as a kick-off type activity or a way to end the class.  The quizzes on this site could be useful for an extension or pre-test activity as well!

Activity 9

Scenario 3: Anonymous Blogging
Ms. Gifford learned about a new blog that does not require the arduous process of setting up individual accounts for each student. This seemed like an easy way to jump into blogging as a class. Ms. Gifford talked about acceptable use with her students but did not inform the principal or parents of her instructional goals or objectives for using a class blog. Because students did not have accounts, they were able to post comments on the blog anonymously. Although, this protected student privacy, it snowballed into a barrage of inappropriate and harassing comments. Ms. Gifford quickly shut the blog down and went back to the drawing board.

Ethical issues: Parents should be made aware of any time their child is going to be posting items onto the internet.  Perhaps this is covered in this school's technology policy. However, parents should be made aware of the their child's internet usage.

Safety/Well being: If this site is open to the public and anyone can post with an anonymous user-tag it could be dangerous.  Since there are many online predators, anyone can access this site and begin to interact with a student who may not know how to handle this situation.  Therefore, this site would need to be closely monitored by the teacher if she wishes to continue using this open site.

Recommendation: I would recommend using a closed site that students need to create a user-tag and only those who are invited can access, read and comment on the posts.  This way if there is any cyber-bullying or inappropriate actions the teacher can address this.

Real life connection: I do not have any real-life connections to this scenario.  Does anyone have any they would be willing to share?

Scenario 5: Email Complication
Mr. Lopez, a social studies teacher, has been using the same PowerPoint to introduce content on the electoral-college for many years now. He recently saw a Prezi his high school-age daughter created for a class and asked her to teach him how to create a Prezi. He was able to link images and video content instead of just text and found that his students seemed more motivated and lively in a debate about voting politics.  He decided to have his 7th graders create Prezis in small groups outlining their main points for the election debate.  What Mr. Lopez discovered in the computer lab is that as students were creating Prezi Edu accounts and told to use their school provided email when registering, they could not activate their Prezi accounts because the school email settings only allow emails internally, and therefore cannot receive emails from outside the district. Mr. Lopez’s assignment was suddenly dead in the water.

Recommendation: I would recommend to Mr. Lopex that he have his students create an e-mail that would be internal to the district.  This way each student could create a prezi and have an active e-mail where they could communicate with their teachers.  Many 7th graders do have e-mail accounts, but many do not.  Those who have a-mail accounts would be able to create a second that would work inside the district.

Real life connection: When I was helping students use Moodle for the Biology course I co-taught many students needed to create google e-mail account and then create a moodle account.  Although this took a lot of time upfront, it was really great for students to have access to moodle.  Moodle is where lessons, assignments, study tools etc was kept for student use for preparing for tests or if they were absent or lost something.

Activity 8

IEP tracking

I created a form that I could use to track student IEP goals.  This would be a great way to get teacher input on how a student is doing in mainstream classes in a particular subject or even on overall social skills. I also saw an area where you can get a summary of the information.  I would utilize this at my IEP meetings to show parents how a student has been progressing through the year according to what teachers are seeing in the classroom.

Activity 7

Google Spreadsheet

Above is the link to a spreadsheet I have used to keep track of student IEP/504 needs to save me time when I need to accommodate/modify material.  I really like this way of sharing information since many people can view and utilize this information. This would be great for co-teachers since they would both need to utilize this document.  I could use this in my classroom with a co-teacher to ensure we both have the needed information to accommodate and modify assignments for our students in they best way possible. A con would be if this information is not updated properly, but this is a simple house-keeping issue which can be worked through.

Activity 6

 Study Tools

Mind Map/Graphic Organizers
I chose to work in spicy nodes to create a concept map for students who are going to be working on creating an essay outline.  I think this is a great tool for students who are learning how to write to use.  I think it would be really easy to have students set this up and write their outline in this software to prepare for writing.

Flash Cards

I chose to work in Study Blue to create flash cards for an English course. This is a really fun and easy to use software.  It was fairly intuitive since many of the words I chose would have a definition that would pop-up and I could just slide it into the definition portion of the flash card.  I really liked this and think I could use it with students who are going to need to learn terms! Activity 5

This was really fun to create.  I think this could be a fun way for students in flipped classes to do presentations! It could be fun for students to record a presentation individually or with a group that students in a flipped course could watch then comment on.

Activity 4

This is a great tool to use for an interactive experience via computer!  I found this very easy to complete and decided to upload it via youtube since I think that looks great on my blog!  This is a great tool that I will use to upload videos to my staff webpage for student reference on assignments.  I think this will help cut down on student wait time for questions since they will be able to look at my site and get help after school hours instead of waiting for school the next day. It could also be helpful for students who are absent and need to catch up!
